Don't Wait to Vaccinate

A Junior League of Richardson Signature Project

Don't Wait to Vaccinate is a signature project for JLR that originated in March 1994. This free immunization program is a unique coalition between JLR, the City of Richardson and the Methodist Richardson Medical Center.  The idea stemmed from a 1989 outbreak of measles in the US after nine Metroplex children died from the disease.  The Richardson City Council and RISD concluded that a local program was needed to ensure that all RISD students would be properly immunized.  The clinic currently administers all required vaccines to eligible children of Richardson residents, JRL members, city and hospital employees and RISD students ages 2-18 years of age.  JLR provides partial funding and volunteers for the program.  Volunteers greet parents and children, explain registration procedures and introduce clients to the nurse.   MRMC provides the facility and nurses and the City of Richardson maintains the records of the immunizations as well as scheduling appointments.  The vaccines are provided by the state.  The clinic is operated year round every Tuesday from 4:30 pm -8:30 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am-1:00 pm; holidays excluded.  To make an appointment or get directions visit the City of Richardson website.

Miss Belle's Place

A Junior League of Richardson Signature Project

Miss Belle’s is a two-story Victorian farmhouse, circa 1887, depicting life at the turn of the century. In 1902, it became Richardson’s first private school operated by Miss Belle. It is one of the oldest remaining structures of early Richardson. JLR is responsible for its maintenance and members act as tour docents. JLR updated the landscaping and the structure received a new roof in 2010.

Miss Belle's Place is a collaborative project between the City of Richardson, Owens Country Farm and The Junior League of Richardson. For tour information call (972) 644-5979.

Richardson Adult Literacy Center

The Center, organized in 1990, was formed through the cooperation of The Junior League of Richardson, Altrusa International, Inc. of Richardson,  and various dedicated community leaders.  These organizations created the mission of offering free English instruction to the increasingly diverse adult population of the city of Richardson and the RISD.  The Center has now provided this service to non-English speaking adults for over twenty years.  Members are proud to support Teddy Bear Time, a literacy program designed to model reading skills to children for pre-kindergarten parents at local elementary schools and Richardson Reads One Book.

Done in a Day Projects

The Richardson community has many volunteer needs for short-term projects that can be “done in a day." This program enables the Junior League of Richardson to reach a number of programs throughout the year. Members volunteer at a variety of City of Richardson activities including: The Great Fountain Festival, City Wide Pet Day, Santa's Village, Senior Center Mardi Gras and Wildflower Arts & Music Festival.  Other local projects include Sheroes with the Region 10 Education Service Center, Dobie Elementary School, literacy events and Network activities.

SLANT 45

The Junior League of Richardson was proud to participate in Service Learning Adventures in North Texas (SLANT 45) during the 2010-2011 year.  SLANT 45 was a community-wide service initiative organized in conjunction with Super Bowl XLV, played at Cowboys Stadium in February 2011.  The North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee desire was to leave a legacy of service and cooperation throughout the Metroplex that would endure long after the game had been played. Visit www.slant45.org for more information.  JLR Members lead volunteer groups thoughout the community as Coach Assistants.

The JLR also represented Slant 45 at the City of Richardson's Tree the Town Kickoff event., on April 18, 2010.  JLR members led citizen teams in tree planting activities and provided first aid. Daryl Johnston, Slant 45 Chairman, was on hand for the activities and took a moment to visit with the JLR.
